The wines of Dufouleur in Nuits St. Georges are some of the most consistent in Burgundy's Cote D'Or. We have been offering the firm's "Louis Affre" label for several years, and this recent addition is another admirable Chardonnay from their portfolio of fine wines. We found this "futs de chene" wine to have oak flavors that have been well integrated with the ripe fruit, and not domineering. This is a well rounded and deeply flavored Chardonnay from the upper vineyards of the Cotes de Nuits which can hold its own from fine wines from Chassagne or Meursault. BHCN99 BHCN99

The story of Gleon can be traced back to 778 A.D., when Charlemagne created the first Viscount of Narbonne charged with maintaining a defense against the Saracens. Gleon, at the head of the pass, become a major defense line of Charlemagne's Kingdom. This was a family owned land for over 1,000 years until the last Marquis was killed in 1830 and his wife sold the property to the Bonnes-Montanie family who have grown vines on the property since 1853. This lovely wine from Corbieres, which is part of the Languedoc, is well structured and meaty with lush 'blackberry' fruit, aged in oak barriques. This is the top cuvee from Gleon Monatanie. The Silvaner grapes for the Geil Eiswein were picked on December 12th, 2002 at 6.30 AM. The temperature was -10 degrees Centigrade and the must weight registered 160 degrees Oechsle. This is another outstanding effort we are receiving from the seemingly infallible Rudolf Geil. The Eiswein presents a strong mineral nose with herbaceous notes and a palate of very ripe or dried fruit and figs and will be a wonderful dessert wine for the upcoming winter holidays! We "re-discovered" Weingut Johanneshof, which is run by Wilfried Korrel, during our most recent trip to Germany. Herr Korrel makes wonderful wines that are of the highest quality and always competing for the top awards in the German wine competitions. The St. Martin Riesling Spatlese is a perfect example of Herr Korrel's winemaking capabilities. The Fillastre family has owned this small property in Bourdeaux sin 1654. The Domaine has some of the oldest vines in St. Julien - some of the Malbec vines are well past 100 years old. Mr Fillastre usually ages his wine, which is made from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Malbec, in oak barrells for 28 months to 3 years creating a huge wine! When asked to describe his wine Mr. Fillastre says, "It is good." We on the other hand describe it as having a brilliant ruby color with a nose of ripe burnt fruit and spice along with coffee and tobacco. The Gruener Veltliner Grape is Austria's most planted white grape variety (37%). It is also planted in many East European Countries. The grape was planted in New York State, but did not do well. Although eminently drinkable in their youth, the best Veltliners have an extraordinary ageing potential, and will have lost nothing of their power and structure after 30 years. The ones grown on primary rock are sometimes mistaken for grand crus wines from the Burgundy. I hope you enjoy this Veltliner, there are more to come. Serve chilled. AWVTS799 AWVTS799
